David Lewis

David has 30 years of experience in all aspects of commercial real estate work, specialising in real estate finance transactions for lenders and borrowers, including high value cross-border finance loan and restructuring transactions across a range of sectors.

He has significant experience in real estate development and investment transactions, including both acquisitions and sales as well as asset management work. David is also involved in advising on the real estate elements of insolvency transactions including both enforcement and work out situations as well as providing real estate support in corporate acquisitions and disposals.

In May 2011, David completed a 9-month full-time secondment at Lloyds Banking Group as a senior lawyer, where he advised the Scottish real estate teams on various Scottish and English banking- and property-related legal issues.

  • Providing the lead Scottish real estate advisory role to a major UK bank on the cross-border refinancing of mixed use (including retail and serviced office) developments in Edinburgh and Glasgow, as part of a wider portfolio refinancing of a European provider of serviced accommodation.
  • Providing the lead Scottish real estate advisory role to a major UK bank on the refinancing of a Channel Islands based borrower in respect of a large west of Scotland office park, as well as follow on lease consent and reporting issues.
  • Acting for a foreign fund in the acquisition, estate management and corporate disposal of a large west of Scotland mixed use retail, food and leisure park.
  • Acting in the acquisition of purpose-built student accommodation in Glasgow, including providing the lead role in borrower side finance arrangements with an external institutional funder.
  • Providing Scottish real estate advice to a major global waste management enterprise on a corporate disposal, including the hiving down and onward sale of certain Scottish property assets including coordinating advice in respect of remediation and other site issues.
  • Advising a premium listed investment company on the development financing of a Glasgow city centre property for conversion from a hotel to student accommodation.
  • Acting for a major UK bank on the refinancing of a UK wide housebuilder including advising on diligence and security issues for a large number of residential development sites including taking into the security net further development sites on a rolling basis post-acquisition.
  • Advising a German fund on the refinancing of a retail park in Livingston including advising on issues pertaining to the splitting of the title pre-funding.
  • Advising miscellaneous lenders and funds in acquisitions and fundings of various Scottish hotels including dealing with diligence reporting, advising on hotel and asset management agreements and overall project management.
  • Providing real estate support and advice in respect of the acquisition of a large mixed use shopping centre in the north of Scotland.
  • Acting for a UK lender in refinancing a large portfolio of retail and residential units in Edinburgh.
