The Equal Opportunities Commission has launched a campaign to highlight the prevalence
of pregnancy discrimination in the UK and to call for urgent action to remedy
the unlawful treatment of pregnant women at work. The campaign, Pregnant and
Productive, is based upon research undertaken by the EOC which has revealed
that every year approximately 30,000 working women are sacked, made redundant
or leave their jobs due to pregnancy discrimination. It also revealed that
women were being denied promotion, bonuses and training and were facing verbal
abuse just for being pregnant. As part of the campaign, which is being fronted
by Olympian Denise Lewis, the EOC is calling for the government to provide
a written statement of maternity rights and employer responsibilities to every
pregnant woman.
