Graham Young

Graham is a Partner in the Banking and Finance team, specialising in energy and infrastructure. Taking a commercially minded and solution-focused approach, he helps clients navigate the complexities of energy and infrastructure financings. 

He has broad experience of structuring and executing complex financing arrangements across wind, solar, hydro and clean energy assets. He also has significant expertise in various PPP / PFI models. He is familiar with all types of debt finance arrangements in the sector – from simple bilateral bank loans to public bonds issues – enabling him to help developers, sponsors and financial institutions navigate the funding cycle for their project. 

  • Acting for Diamond Transmission Hornsea Two Limited on the £1.141 billion acquisition financing for the transmission assets relating to the 1,320MW Hornsea Two offshore windfarm. The purchase was part-financed by a debt package from a syndicate of international lenders.
  • Advising Boralex on the approx £130 million financing with NatWest and Export Development Canada (acting in a commercial capacity) for the Limekiln Wind Farm, a 106 MW onshore wind project near Thurso in Caithness.
  • Advising National Westminster Bank on the approx £190 million construction financing of the c220MW North Kyle wind farm project located in East Ayrshire.
  • Acting for Horizon Energy Infrastructure Limited, a UK-based smart metering asset provider with a portfolio of around one million smart meters, in relation to a £350 million revolving senior facility, a working capital facility and a debt service reserve facility, with a syndicate of seven international lenders. 
  • Acting for Arcus Infrastructure Partners on the acquisition and financing (and the subsequent £545 million refinancing) of Smart Meter Assets 1 Limited, a smart meter infrastructure provider in the UK with an installed meter portfolio of 1.6 million meters.
  • Acting for Diamond Transmission Hornsea One Limited on the £1.175 billion acquisition and financing of the transmission assets relating to the 1218MW Hornsea One offshore windfarm from Hornsea 1 Limited. The purchase was part-financed by a debt package from a syndicate of international lenders, including JBIC and Aviva.
  • Advising the owner of a portfolio of anaerobic digestion plants on the restructuring of their senior facilities and the equity and mezzanine loan investment by an international energy trader.
  • Advising firmus energy, one of three gas distribution operators in Northern Ireland, on a financing package to refinance existing debt and provide additional financing for their network expansion and energy transition strategy which includes the injection of locally produced biomethane into the gas grid. The facilities totalling £285 million included a £195 million term loan, £75 million capex facility and a £15 million RCF.
  • Advising Islands Energy Group (IEG), the regulated natural gas and LPG supply and distribution business on the islands of Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man, on the refinancing of the debt facilities put in place at the time of its acquisition by Ancala Partners LLP. 
  • Acting for Birmingham University on the 1,200-bed student accommodation project which will provide nearly 500 new student bedrooms and upgrade over 700 existing student bedrooms at Pritchatts Park Student Village, funded by senior debt from Pension Insurance Corporation plc.
  • Advising the London School of Economics (LSE) on a major student accommodation redevelopment project which will provide 676 new student bedrooms together with associated commercial space and a community café in Southwark.
  • Acting for Kingston Student Living (a consortium between Equitix, ENGIE and Kingston University) on the over £100 million student accommodation project for Kingston University in South-West London, part funded by privately placed bonds (50% fixed-rate, 50% index-linked) wrapped by Assured Guaranty.
