Katy is passionate about the rural sector, and specialises in rural property and agricultural matters. She acts for a wide range of clients from private individuals to limited companies and partnerships.

She advises on a broad spectrum of rural legal matters including agricultural tenancies; the purchase and sale of farms, forestry and other rural properties; security and finance work for both clients and lenders; and voluntary registrations. She also has experience in renewable energy projects – advising landowners on a variety of projects including solar and wind turbines.

Katy has a focus on crofting law, particularly dealing with croft transactions (purchase, sales and assignations), crofters’ right to buys, and preparing and submitting regulatory applications to the Crofting Commission. She has acted for croft tenants, landlords and owner-occupiers.

  • Advising an agricultural tenant on the relinquishment of his secure agricultural tenancy, including the subsequent assignation of the lease for value. 
  • Advising a private individual in relation to the purchase of a croft tenancy, including advising on crofters’ duties and statutory conditions and preparation of Crofting Commission regulatory applications. 
  • Regularly advising a major lender in relation to secured agricultural lending to facilitate purchases of new land or property, restructuring, diversification projects and expansion. 
  • Advising a crofting landlord in relation to their croft tenant exercising a right to buy. 
  • Advising an owner-occupier crofter in relation to a suspected failure by the crofter to reside on or near the croft, including assisting with the preparation of an application to the Crofting Commission to let the croft to a third party.
