John heads the competition team at Shepherd and Wedderburn, with some 20 years’ experience in dealing with competition authorities at both national and EU level. John is dual qualified in the UK and Germany and regularly advises on major UK and EU competition investigations and antitrust litigation. John has particular industry experience in fast moving consumer goods, financial services and the pharmaceutical industry.
John is also an expert in litigation funding. He acted for Albion in the first third party funded follow-on damages claim in the Competition Appeal Tribunal. More recently he has acted for a global client in negotiating third party funding for a major follow-on damages claim arising from an EEA-wide cartel.
John has a very pragmatic and commercial approach to his work that is highly valued by his clients. Recent cases of note include:
- Acting for John Lewis in a vertical pricing investigation into sports bras, a case that closed on a ‘no grounds for action’ basis after a statement of objection and an oral hearing.
- Securing a case closure for Teva Pharmaceuticals in the CMA’s investigation into paroxetine after a statement of objections, a supplemental statement of objections and two oral hearings.
- Obtaining an injunction against Barclays bank for a refusal to supply a business (a case which subsequently settled).
- Obtaining follow-on damages for Albion from Welsh Water.
John has consistently been ranked as a leading competition law expert in the London market by Chambers UK, Chambers European, Chambers Global and Legal 500 over the past ten years. His team won the coveted Competition Law of the Year award at The Lawyer Legal Awards 2014 and were finalists also in 2015 and 2016.
