    Church of Scotland Property - sales to adjoining owners

    There is provision in the Church of Scotland (Property and Endowments) (Amendment)
    Act 1933 requiring the General Trustees of the Church of Scotland to offer
    to adjoining owners an opportunity to purchase ground originally transferred
    for the erection of a church or manse whenever they plan to sell that ground.

    International Financial Reporting Standards - new rules for property

    From January 2005 the International Financial Reporting Standards become compulsory for EU listed companies. The objective is for the accounting practices of listed companies across the EU to be harmonised. The RICS has issued a Guide to the effects of the new International Financial Reporting Standards on the Property Industry, which explains how the new rules will apply to the accounting treatment of properties owned by affected companies, and how the reporting of property assets on the balance sheet will be affected.

    Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002

    The two UK Freedom of Information Acts both came into force on 1 January, 2005.
    In Scotland, the relevant Act is the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act
    2002 which gives the general public a right of access to all recorded information
    of any age held by Scottish public authorities covered by the Act, within 20
    working days of request.

    Pool re insurance arrangements: general principles of interpretation

    The Treasury has issued a set of general principles of interpretation in respect of its application of the definition of an "act of terrorism" under the Retrocession Agreement with Pool Re in accordance with the Reinsurance (Acts of Terrorism) Act 1993, following consultation with the insurance and commercial property industries.

    Pool Re was set up in 1993 to ensure that terrorism insurance for commercial property would continue to be available in Great Britain, following the withdrawal of reinsurers from the market.

    Sexism in the City - Villalba

    City high-flyer Stephanie Villalba has lost her £7.5 million claim of sex discrimination brought against US financial institution Merrill Lynch. Ms Villalba, who had worked at the bank for 17 years, claimed unfair dismissal, victimisation, sex discrimination and unequal pay. The tribunal heard evidence of Ms Villalba's claim that she was "bullied and belittled" and that her boss made "humiliating" comments behind her back. She also complained of being asked to serve the drinks and sit in a stewardess's seat on a corporate flight with male colleagues.

    Joe Blogs - employee sacked for internet rants

    It has been reported that Joe Gordon, a former employee of high-street bookstore Waterstones has become the first person in Britain to be dismissed for setting up an online diary to "vent steam". His 'blog', a satirical newsletter entitled the Woolamaloo Gazette, is a website set up by Mr Gordon in 1992 to discuss various topics and invites individuals to log on and contribute. The blog contains his "ramblings, mumblings or rants" including those in relation to his employer, referring to the company as "Bastardstones" and to an individual manager as "Evil Boss".
