The £700 million telephone directories advertising industry has been
referred do the Competition Commission by the competition watchdog, as a seven
month-review by the Office of Fair Trading has suggested that there are competition
law concerns. The market is dominated by Yellow Pages and Thomson Local that
together hold in excess of 90 per cent of the UK market. Effective branding
and network effects have made this a highly concentrated market with high barriers
to entry and soaring profits for the incumbents. The Competition Commission
has two years to present a resolution.
