The EU competition watchdog has given the go-ahead for the UK government to subsidise the expansion of broadband services in certain parts of Wales. The aid will help bring broadband to more remote areas which at present are not considered commercially viable by the private sector. A service provider will be picked through a tender procedure and will be expected to fund half of the cost of the project itself. The funding has been approved as it is expected to have a beneficial effect on the regional development without causing any competition law problems.
