The joint venture between Stagecoach and Scottish Citylink which operates bus services between certain major Scottish cities, such as Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness, is to be the subject of an in-depth competition law investigation. The legality of the joint venture (which was formed in the autumn last year) is to be assessed by the Competition Commission. It is hoped that a decision will be reached by the end of the summer. The undertakings under investigation have expressed frustration at the development. They maintain that the deal is leading to customer improvements and that commuters have been given a credible substitute for travelling by train.
