A woman has been awarded almost £7000 in compensation after she was fired from her job, as a despatch manager for Veronica Ltd, by text message. Charlie Yates received the message from her boss, after taking six day's holiday time to care for brothers and sisters while her mother was recovering from an operation.
The employment tribunal heard that the message read: "Don’t bother coming in, you are fired for unauthorised absence, you also took more holiday hours last week than you were entitled to." Miss Yates said that she had 'okayed' the leave with her boss before taking the days off, and that he had told her to take off as long as she needed. The tribunal in Leeds found that Miss Yates had been subject to automatic unfair dismissal and awarded her £6800 in compensation.
