Postal watchdog Postcomm has reprimanded Royal Mail for infringing its licence
conditions by employing anticompetitive practices. Royal Mail, which currently
has a market share of over 99 per cent in then letters market, is subject
to strict checks by the regulator to make sure it does not abuse its dominance.
By offering discounts to journal and catalogue businesses the company has
breached
two of its conditions. Royal Mail now has to ensure that its employees will
be given the necessary education in competition law. Postcomm is letting
the firm off with undertakings this time, but has said that it will resort
to more
severe punishments, such as a fine, where Royal Mail to be caught out again.
