Following worries that its practices might be breaking competition law, the
Law Society of Scotland has done away with its schedule of recommended prices
for legal fees. The price recommendations could be found on the Society's website
in the form of a comprehensive 16-page table. The Office of Fair Trading has
expressed concerns at the pricing table, but formal action had yet to been
taken. In 2003 under similar circumstances the European Commission found the
Belgian Architects' Association, another professional body, guilty of price
fixing for adopting recommended minimum fees. The Law Society has decided to
pre-empt any investigation by abandoning the table.
