It has been reported that Joe Gordon, a former employee of high-street bookstore Waterstones has become the first person in Britain to be dismissed for setting up an online diary to "vent steam". His 'blog', a satirical newsletter entitled the Woolamaloo Gazette, is a website set up by Mr Gordon in 1992 to discuss various topics and invites individuals to log on and contribute. The blog contains his "ramblings, mumblings or rants" including those in relation to his employer, referring to the company as "Bastardstones" and to an individual manager as "Evil Boss".
Mr Gordon commented that he thought the decision to dismiss him was "rather Orwellian and has implications for freedom of speech". No public comment has been made by his former employer as the disciplinary process has not yet completed.
