The Competition Commission publishes an Issues Statement.

On 31st August, the Competition Commission published an Issues
Statement in relation to its inquiry into the classified directories
advertising services market.  The main providers of classified
directories advertising services are Yell Group plc and Thomson Local
Directories, accounting for over 90% of the total supply.  The
Commission has been asked to probe this market for any anti-competitive
aspects and, if any are found, how they can be remedied.  This
followed an initial Office of Fair Trading inquiry into the market and
the effect of the current price cap.  The Issues Statement results
from the initial process of information and evidence gathering and
seeks to identify the key areas of the inquiry.  For example, the
Commission will inquire as to the scope of the relevant market, the
extent of barriers to entry and whether profitability levels suggest
that excessive prices are being charged.  The purpose of the
statement is to give interested parties an opportunity to raise any
further points for inquiry with the Commission.
