New proposals have been announced in a recent report by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) which will enable non-medical professional such as physiotherapists, nurses and chiropractors to issue sick notes.

The report's findings are formed on the basis that a physiotherapist, or other specialist is more likely to be in the best position to provide an accurate diagnosis of the employee's medical condition in comparison to a GP who may have had no prior dealings with the patient other than the sick note request.

This is welcome news for employers, who often rely on sick notes as evidence of the state of their employees' health. The proposals will make it more difficult for employees to place pressure on their GPs to produce a note in instances of feigned illness.
