The mental health charity, Mind, has placed the cost of workplace stress at around £100 billion per annum. It is thought that around 45 million working days are lost each year and workplace stress can also lead to poor performance and inefficiency.
According to a recent survey of 800 companies carried out by the CBI, 81% said that the mental health of employees should be a priority but only 10% of companies actually had an official policy on workplace stress.
The charity has called for greater control for employees over their workload and an appropriate degree of self-management.
Employers are under a legal duty of care to their workforce to implement appropriate policies to minimise the impact of work-related stress and should ensure they carry out stress risk assessments as required by the Health & Safety Executive.
