Aberdeen City Council has dropped plans to introduce a pay
restructuring scheme in light of opposition from the GMB, Unison and
Transport and General Union as the scheme proposed salary cuts of up to
£16,000. The proposed scheme was intended to implement the strategy
agreed by all Scottish local authorities in 1999 to bring salaries in
line with equal pay legislation. All Scottish local authorities must
implement this strategy but as yet no Scottish local authority has
succeeded.

Meanwhile, legal experts have predicted that up to 50,000 female
council employees are eligible to bring equal pay claims, potentially
costing Scottish local authorities as much as £500m.
