A former prison officer who was treated as a 'grass' after she reported bullying and intimidation of inmates has won a record £447,600 compensation. She successfully claimed constructive dismissal and victimisation and the compensation sum awarded covered income, pension and hurt to feelings. Additionally, she was awarded approximately £90,000 in legal costs.
Mrs. Lingard's complaints related to one officer, who she claimed attempted to plant images of children in a sex offender's cell after warning the prisoner he might be slashed by inmates if such material was found. After reporting this behaviour, she was discriminated against, intimidated and stonewalled by colleagues and felt forced to resign. The tribunal commented on Mrs. Lingard's good career prospects after 15 years in the service.
